The 5 Questions to Ask Before Selecting a CLM Platform

March 10, 2026 · 6 min read · Doyin Awosusi

Choosing a Contract Lifecycle Management platform is one of the most consequential technology decisions a legal team will make. Here's how to evaluate your options with clarity and confidence.

Before you sit through a single vendor demo, align your stakeholders on what success looks like. The right CLM is the one that fits your contracting model—not the one with the flashiest roadmap slide.

Start with volume and complexity: how many contracts do you originate each year, and what approval paths do they actually take? Map the exceptions, because those edge cases are where implementations stall.

Ask how data will move: integrations with CRM, ERP, and identity providers often matter more than AI features on day one. Push vendors to show realistic timelines for your stack, not a generic checklist.

Clarify who will administer the tool after go-live. If the answer is "we'll figure it out," budget for managed services or expect shelfware.

Finally, define adoption metrics up front—active users, cycle time, and template usage—so you can prove value to finance within two quarters of launch.
